Tamar Ilana – The Sefardi « Judy Garland »

A radio program of the European Institute for Jewish Music hosted by Hervé Roten

MUSIQUES JUIVES D’HIER ET D’AUJOURD’HUI – MARDI 24 SEPTEMBRE 2019, JUDAÏQUES FM (94.8), 21H00

Born in Toronto in 1986, Tamar Ilana grew up on the road, along with her mother, the ethnomusicologist Judith Cohen, in her journeys around the Mediterranean Sea to collect old songs and stories before they disappear, in small Portuguese villages, nursing homes in Greece and Turkey, mountain cities in Spain, the last Sefardi communities of Morocco, the old towns in the Balkans.

Initiated to flamenco dance when she was 7 years old, she starts learning to sing flamenco with the great masters of the Fundación Cristina Heeren in Seville, and in Paris, where she perfects her vocal technique with Martina Catella.

In 2011, Tamar Ilana goes back to Toronto where she creates the band Ventanas with who she performs a repertoire blending traditional Judeo-Spanish, Spanish, Bulgarian, Hebrew, French, and Romanian songs, as well as original compositions.

In 2013, Tamar Ilana & Ventanas release the CD Ventanas, and Arrelumbre in 2015. These two albums are nominated in the Canadian Folk Music Awards, in the category of « best traditional singer ». Their third album, Mistrāl, is released in May 2019.

Ilana Tamar, rising star of the multicultural musical stage, will be on the telephone from Toronto to present these 3 albums. The opportunity to discover a surprising artist whose faith reminds the one of Judy Garland, singer, dancer and child prodigy of the American stage.
